As we are preparing an article about the most important safety device of the car, the restraint system, we thought we would solicit information directly from users of the many systems available. Restraint systems are often not very well installed, poorly inspected and many times out dated.
We found an excellent article on written by Ms. Jennifer Bowden on the SFI Foundation website. It is titled ” Seat Belts Essential to Driver Safety”. In her article she points out that age is an important factor in the ability of your restraint system to function properly. Being these are mostly manufactured utilizing Dupont Nylon 6-6 or a similair material, they actually breakdown overtime due to exposure of the elements and chemicals that may come in contact with them. After a big crash, we usually replace them.
This explains the SFI’s 2 year life span on the restraint system. At that time replacement or re-webbing and recertification is required. If you purchase new ones check the date. If they are old, send them back. Before you have a set rewebbed, check the SFI website to make sure that the manufacturer has not had issues that lead to it being decertified. In July of 2009,certain products of a large, very well known and trusted manufacturer were temporarily decertified and as of this writing has not been rescinded.
I would be interested to hear experiences and information regarding driver restraints. Both happy endings and tragic ones as well.
